St Mary’s Church Bocan, 1st July 2007—No 30

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Responsorial Psalm
O Lord, it is you who are my portion.

Speak, Lord, your servant is listening: you have the message of eternal life.

Lines to the Blessed Sacrament

Thou dear and mystic semblance,
Before whose form I kneel,
I tremble as I think upon
The glory thou dost veil,
And ask myself, can he who late
The ways of darkness trod,
Meet face to face, and heart to heart,
His sin-avenging God?

My Judge and my Creator,
If I presume to stand
Amid thy pure and holy ones,
It is at thy command,
To lay before thy mercy’s seat
My sorrows and my fears,
To wail my life and kiss thy feet
In silence and in tears.

O God! That dreadful moment,
In sickness and in strife,
When death and hell seem’d watching
For the last weak pulse of life,
When on the waves of sin and pain
My drowning soul was toss’d,
Thy hand of mercy saved me then,
When hope itself was lost.

I hear Thy voice, my saviour,

It speaks within my breast,
“Oh, come to me, thou weary one,
I’ll hush thy cares to rest;”
Then from the parch'd and burning waste
Of sin, where long I trod,
I come to thee, thou stream of life,
My Saviour and my God!

JJ Callanan, 1795-1828

Reflection
The Eucharist….shows us….what value each person, our brother or sister, has in God’s eyes, if Christ offers himself equally to each one, under the species of bread and wine. If our Eucharist worship is authentic, it must make us grow in in awareness and the dignity of each person.

Christ comes into the heart of our brothers and sisters and visits their consciences. How the image of each and every one changes, when we become aware of this reality, when we make it the subject of our reflections!
Pope John Paul II

What a to-do

The ‘to-do’ list is enshrined in many a persons life. In some ways it has become a less dramatic form of the ancient custom of saints like Jerome being portrayed with a skull on their desk to remind them of their mortality. Listing things is a tacit acknowledgement and reminder that our time here is really limited and we ought to make the most of it. Prioritising things can be a tool for helping one actually do so.

After all, the thought of death concentrates the mnd wonderfully and what is complex suddenly becomes clear. Three would-be-disciples of Jesus have to decide if they will choose comfort or convention or custom or Christ. They are asked to look ahead, not back. No regrets, no excuses, no turning back, no giving up because it has become too costly or difficult, or demanding, or it interferes with our comfort zone, our activities or lives.

We don’t know if the trio continued with the Lord or were they turned away. More important however, is the kind of answer we will give.
