Reasons for Life

I don't know how to say it, but somehow, it seems to me
That maybe we are stationed where God wants us to be;
That the little place I’m filling is the reason for my birth.
And, just to do the work I do, he sent us down earth.
If God had wanted otherwise, I reckon He'd have made
Me just a little different, of a worse or better grade.
And, since God knows and understands all things of land and sea,
I fancy that He placed me here just where He wanted me.
Sometimes I get to thinking, as my labours I review,
That I should like a higher place with greater things to do;
But I come to the conclusion ,when the envying is stilled,
That the post to which God sent me is the post He wanted filled.
So, I plod along and struggle in the hope, when day is through
That I’m really necessary to the things God wants to do;
And there isn’t any service I can give, which I should scorn,
For it may be just the reason God allowed that I be born.

Day for Life

Live all you can; it’s a mistake not to. It doesn’t matters so much what you do in particular, so long as you have had your life. If you haven’t had that, what have you had? What one loses one loses; make no mistake about that. The right time is any time that one is still lucky enough to be alive. Live!

The Deep End – Day for Life

When I started using a computer for the first time in 1990 I had to download some loony lingo into my brain. Acronyms were all the go. You had WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get, or, don’t blame your computer for your silly mistakes. Another was GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out, or, don’t blame your computer for spewing out your sow’s ear instead of a silk purse.

Alive and well, the GIGO maxim applies not only to computers but also to life, especially today as we celebrate Ireland’s ‘Day for Life’. This celebration, an initiative of the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Ireland, Scotland and England & Wales, is celebrated in Ireland, Britain and Scotland each year – in Ireland since 2001. It’s a response to the proposal of the late Pope John Paul II that ‘a day for life be celebrated each year in every country to foster individual consciences, in families, in the Church, and in civil society, a recognition of the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition’ [Evangelium Vitae # 85].

Now, back to GIGO. Or, what you put into life is what you get out of it. In today’s Second Reading, Phil 4: 6-9, Paul tells us what to put in: truth, honour, justice, purity, excellence, and whatever is pleasing, commendable, or worthy of praise. We should focus on these, absorbing them, savouring them and allow them to do their work of bringing happiness, gratitude, and peace into the human heart.

Perhaps, GIGO needs an update: Goodness IN, Goodness Out.
