St
Mary’s Church Bocan - 7th October
2007—No 44
27th
Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Swineherd
This poem speaks
to me of escape from the trials and
tribulations of life: of a contentedness
completely satisfying.
‘When all this is over’,
said the swineherd,
‘I mean to retire, where
Nobody will have heard about my special
skills
And conversation is mainly about the
weather.
I intend to learn how to make coffee,
at least as well
As the Portuguese lay-sister in the
kitchen
And polish the brass fenders every
day.
I want to lie awake at night
Listening to cream crawling to the
top of the jug
And the water lying soft in the cistern.
I want to see an orchard where the
trees grow in straight lines
And the yellow fox finds shelter between
the navy-blue trunks,
Where it gets dark early in summer
And the apple-blossom is allowed to
wither on the bough.’

Life
What a horrid thing fear is –
it keeps us apart from life instead
of participating in it and causes
us to waste so much of our God-given
time on earth. To “have a go”
is the important thing, isn’t
it – not whether or not we succeed…When
I sum up everything my short life
has taught me…one thing I’m
sure of, if we do faithfully the tasks
which come to our hand from day to
day, without thinking them either
too big or too small, and if we take
what life sends, without inquests,
or too many “Why me’s?”..
we may one day earn the privilege
of being called a servant of the Lord
and enter into the joys of true service
Sylvia Pedder [when she
was dying of cancer]
