St
Mary’s Church Bocan
8th
July 2007—No 31
14th
Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Responsorial
Psalm
Cry out with joy to God all the
earth.
Death
is Only an Horizon
We
give them back to thee, dear Lord,
who first gave them to us;
and as you did not lose them in the
giving,
so we do not lose them in the return.
Not
as the world gives do you give,
O Lover of souls.
For what is yours is ours also,
if we belong to you.
Life
is unending because love is undying,
and the boundaries of this life are
but an horizon,
and an horizon is but the limit of
our vision.
Lift
us up, strong Son of God,
That we may see further.
Strengthen our faith that we may see
beyond the horizon.
And
while you prepare a place for us,
as you have promised,
us also for that happy place;
that where you are we may be also,
with those we have loved, forever.

The
Gift of Peace
O Spirit of God,
Set at rest the crowded, hurrying,
conscious thoughts within our minds
and hearts.
Let the peace and quiet of your presence
take possession of us.
Help us to relax, to rest, to become
open and receptive to you.
You know our inmost spirit, the hidden
unconscious life within us, the forgotten
memory of hurts and fears, the frustrated
desires, the unresolved tensions and
dilemmas.
Cleanse and sweeten the springs of
our being that freedom, life and love
may flow into both our conscious and
hidden life.
Lord, we lie open before you, waiting
for your healing , your peace and
your word.

Following
his footsteps
It’s interesting to note how
many sons or daughters follow their
parent’s political allegiances
in Ireland. Not to mention those who
take up the same profession as their
father or mother. Is it instinctive,
genetic or just chance? It’s
funny how the same dynamic doesn’t
seem to apply in the case of faith.
Some of our children will practice,
others will not. There are many saints
born of atheists and many atheists
born of saints. Yes, you have better
housing, almost full employment, lower
taxes, SSIA lolly, a vastly wider
variety of food, the rising tide of
prosperity having raised all boats.
Still, the problem
is not that the world isn’t
spiritually hungry, it’s that
the church has a tremendous lack of
sold-out, unselfish Christians, committed
to being a disciple for others. While
people can be very willing to help
out in practical parish projects,
if you really want to get the back
up of parishioners, all a priest has
to do is to suggest anything that
involves sharing their faith. The
response can be in marked contrast
to the Gospels’ 72, more on
the lines of ; ‘who am I to
tell my neighbour what to believe?’
Not so? Well, just think on this;
what we are afraid to do is a clear
indicator of the next thing you need
to do. What do you need to act upon?
