Sunday 16th November 2008.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading Proverbs 31: 10-13. 19-20. 30-31
In the book of Proverbs the writer speaks of the perfect wife, but this could also be applied to the perfect husband, the perfect parents, the perfect children, the perfect employee or the perfect employer. What the writer is saying is: be the best at what ever it is you are called to do or called to be.

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5: 1-6
Preparation is very important. Preparing for Christmas, for birthdays and even sacramental preparation is very important but St Paul is reminding us to be careful that we don’t get caught up in the ‘importance’ of the preparation and miss out on the ‘importance’ of the event.

Gospel Matthew 25: 14-30
The gifts we receive from God should be used wisely and generously.

St Mary’s Church Bocan

16th November 2008

33rd Sunday in Ord. Time.

November

November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.

Time is fleeting….

God, I spend so much time reliving yesterday or anticipating tomorrow that I lose sight of the only time which is really mine – the present..

That’s all I have – all I ever will.

Give me the faith that knows that each moment contains exactly what is best for me.
Give me the hope that trusts you enough to forget past sins and future trials.

Give me the love that makes each minute of life an anticipation of eternity with you.

The Deep End – A Talent To Bemust

The technical support person was having difficulty identifying the problem the caller was having with her computer. After ten minutes of futile questioning he asked her the most basic question of all: ‘What type of computer do you have?’ ‘A white one,’ she replied.

You might think that a caller like that couldn’t possibly have a future in computer technology. And, you’d probably be right. However, when it comes to answering God’s call to do something that sort of reckoning goes out the window. God often calls the least talented, in secular terms, to do God’s will. Why so? Because it must be clear that it’s God’s power working through the individual that gets things done, not the individual’s own talents.

Look at his choice of Pope, for example. The first, I mean. An unlettered fisherman. Would we ever dream of choosing such a candidate for the post today? Definitely not. Our candidates have to be extremely well lettered and talented, even in secular terms. Is that saying anything about our trust in God’s power?

Today’s Gospel [Matt 11: 25-30] is all about trust. A man divides his property among his servants to look after it for him while he’s away. What matters is not how much they earn, but how they use what he gives them. Hiding it away safely is not an option. The owner gives it for use.

We all have at least one talent. It remains a talent to bemuse until, trusting in God, we see its purpose and put it to good use.
