St Mary’s Church Bocan - 17th June 2007:No 28

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Responsorial Psalm
Forgive, Lord, the guilt of my sin.

We all love to be loved. A sense of humour helps. Agatha Christie, when asked what it was like to be married to an archaeologist replied ‘Wonderful darling, the older I get the more interesting he finds me.’

When You Are Old

WHEN you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

William Butler Yeats

Your faith has saved you; go in peace

Release and let go
You’ve heard about Irish Alzheimer’s? It’s where you forget everything except the grudges. While in no way making light of the plight of Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families, the joke does have a pithy truth. Despite everything, we do tend to hold on to negative things emotionally.

How many families are scarred and divided over an issue or property, occasions like funerals and weddings becoming sources of tension in themselves. All of us, if we are truly honest, have hurt and been hurt in the process. We can all tend to be like Simon the Pharisee, a word which means ‘separated one’. They were so perfect in their own religious observation, that they feared contact with others would contaminate them.

Maybe in our churches we need a family reconciliation day? A safe space and place to say ‘sorry’ to each other. Maybe not as lavish a gesture as tears, using hair as a drying agent and expensive perfume but some place we could say; ‘I know/feel I have hurt you. I am sorry.’ similarly, to know that someone bore you no ill will would help you feel released. Ultimately we all need to live in freedom, not in fear or in shadow. God made you to be a child of the light, not a prisoner of darkness. Go to Him.
