Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to his
disciples: "Why is
it that you are so frightened? How
is it that you have no faith?"
Over the past few years
the Church has been going through
a fierce storm. It has been a time
of anxiety and worry for many. It
has also been a time of deep hurt
and anger for others. And there
seems to be no end to it. The word
of Jesus today is very timely for
us. Even though the storm is real
and we have to face the reality
of it with all its implications,
we have to remember that Christ
is with us and he will bring calm
again. However, this does not mean
that we do nothing but wait. We
have a real responsibility to work
for that calm by the ways we love
one another in our homes and in
our community. This will take a
lot of generosity with our time
and our talents in building marriage
and family life to their fullest
and it will take a new commitment
to building the parish as a community
of faith and hope.

Doherty, C.Ss.R.

The
Deep End – A New Creation
[Fr Tom Cahill]
Today’s Second Reading [“
Cor 5:14-17] ‘If anyone is in
Christ, there si a new creation: everything
old has passed away; see everything
has become new’ [v 17] reminds
me of something St Augustine said.
This verse seems to refer to a sudden
transformation rather than a gradual
evolution. God’s Spirit operates
to an urgency that nature doesn’t.
There’s urgency as the Spirit
hears nature’s labour pains
and our own inward groaning as we
await adoption, the redemption of
our bodies [Rom 8:23].
Do we feel the urgency ourselves?
Well, that depends on how we look
at things. Take, for example, the
plans we make – whatever they
may be. We’re hoping for something
better be it home improvement, or
job improvement, even self-improvement;
or be it planning a holiday, buying
a car, or something for the kids.
There’s a constant
‘wanting’ in us for something
new that we might blame consumerism
for. Compulsive buying might be the
outcome of the ‘wanting’
but at source it’s something
deep and profound. Its’ nothing
other than the yearning for the redemption
of our bodies of which Paul speaks.
It’s our craving not just for
better things, but for the best possible
of all things: new creation, being
transformed into the liberated children
of god. St Augustine puts it famously:
‘You have made us for your self,
O Lord, and our hearts are restless
until they rest in you.’
Resting in God is
not guaranteed to happen automatically.
It’s a journey we must make.
And as we don’t know how long
we have to make the journey, every
minute counts.
