The Power of One

One SONG can spark a moment
One FLOWER can wake the dream
One TREE can start a forest
One BIRD can herald spring

One SMILE begins a friendship
One HANDCLASP lifts a soul
One STAR can guide a ship at sea
One WORD can frame the goal

One VOTE can change a nation
One SUNBEAM lights a room
One CANDLE wipes out darkness
One LAUGH will conquer gloom

One STEP must start each journey
One WORD must start each prayer
One HOPE will raise our spirits
One TOUCH can show you care

One VOICE can speak with wisdom
One LIFE can make the difference
You see, it's up to you!!

The Deep End – Whose Strange Ways?

Biologist JBS Haldane once remarked that the universe is not only queerer than we might suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. Something similar might be said of God – though phrased more elegantly. Perhaps St Augustine’s comment that ‘God is younger than all else’ fits the bill. Straightaway it puts us on a collision course with logic: how can the one who is ever ancient, be ever new?

Not surprising then that this ‘illogical’ God acts in some rather strange ways. God admits this in today’s First Reading Isa 55:6-9. ‘…my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways…’[v.8]. But shouldn’t God be the norm and not us? If so, then it’s our ways that are strange and not God’s. Is it because of our strange ways of doing things that today’s Gospel reading [Matt 20: 1-16] seems unfair, until the denarius drops? When it does, what seems unjust to our narrow way of looking at things turns out to be incredibly generous. All the workers receive a fair wage, some a very generous one.

If this story bugs us then we have two issues, at least, to deal with: accepting God’s ‘right’ to do as God pleases – which may not be too easy depending on how close to the bone God operates – and accepting God’s challenge to us to live generously. Only in facing these can we begin to see the heights where God’s thoughts are found [v.9].
