Sunday 26th July 2009

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to Philip: ‘Where can we buy some food for these people to eat?’ In spite of all the riches of our world, countless people die each year of starvation. We can feel totally helpless in the face of this and as a result we ignore it. Generosity is one of the great virtues of our people over the generations and is one that we need to practice in a special way today. But there are other hungers that we can do even more about and Jesus is calling on us to attend to these also. One of the greatest human hungers is for love and affection. This may be in our own close relationships of marriage and family life. There is also the hunger in so many people in our community today for someone to look out for them. That is a must if we are to be a true community of faith in the parish.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

You open wide your hand, O Lord, and grant our desires.

GENEROSITY

VICTOR Hugo, in Ninety-Three, tells the story of a French mother who, after the Revolution, had been driven from her home with her two children. She had wandered through the woods and fields for several days. She and her two children had lived on roots and leaves. On the third morning they had hidden in some bushes on the approach of two soldiers, a captain and a sergeant . The captain ordered the sergeant to find out what was stirring in the bushes; he prodded the mother and her two children out. They were brought to the captain’s side, and he saw in an instant that they were starving; he gave them a long loaf of brown French bread. The mother took it eagerly, like a famished animal, broke it into two pieces, giving one piece to one child and the other to the second child. The sergeant looked up to the captain and said, ‘Is it because the mother is not hungry?’ the captain replied, ‘No sergeant, it is because she is a mother!’

Eucharist: a prayer inspired by the Mass

O Lord! Look into our hearts this day and read us Look into our souls this day and hear us When we thrust out our hands for help - hold us When we open our arms for love - embrace us When we bow our heads to thee - bless us When we give of ourselves - come to us. Amen. Judith Ann Pounder

The Deep End: - In Need of Friends

Fr Tom Cahill SVD

Someone once pointed out that the best time to make friends is before you need them. Paul’s passionate plea for unity in today’s Second Reading [Eph 4:1-6] is a reminder of that fact. Paul, of course, doesn’t package his plea in such self-serving terms. However, in its own street-wise fashion the remark is true. Unity is good, disunity s not. It’s as simple as that.

Paul uses language here that many people, particularly men perhaps, may find difficult to identify with in terms of relating to others. He pleads for ‘humility’, ‘gentleness’, ‘patience’ and that awful thing called ‘love’. In and age when, in the name of so-called entertainment, we are bombarded with images of just the opposite of these – anger, hate, violence and abuse – we might be pardoned for wondering which is the norm in life: humility or arrogance, gentleness or aggression, patience or frenzy, love or hate. A constant diet of grim actors on TV, and on the big screen, aping antisocial antics as if life consisted of never-ending rows fuelled by mindless jealousy can result in a build-up of bile.

So, whether we suffer form indigestion or not is up to us. which do we want: to be hurtful or helpful, coarse or courteous, aggressive or friendly?

Those who feed on anger, hate and violence are no strangers to fear. These take more out of us than they give. It’s the caring, the friendship and the love that makes life pleasant and fulfilling.

Ask any angry, jealous and friendless role model you can find.
