Eden
Rock - By Charles Causley
Memories are always to be treasured—good
ones anyway.
They are waiting for
me somewhere beyond Eden Rock:
My father, twenty-five, in the same
suit
Of Genuine Irish Tweed, his terrier
Jack
Still two years old and trembling
at his feet.
My mother, twenty-three,
in a sprigged dress
Drawn at the waist, ribbon in her
straw hat,
Has spread the stiff white cloth over
the grass.
Her hair, the colour of wheat, takes
on the light.
She pours tea from
a Thermos, the milk straight
From an old H.P. sauce-bottle, a screw
Of paper for a cork; slowly sets out
The same three plates, the tin cups
painted blue.
The sky whitens as
if lit by three suns.
My mother shades her eyes and looks
my way
Over the drifted stream. My father
spins
A stone along the water. Leisurely,
They beckon to me
from the other bank.
I hear them call, 'See where the stream-path
is!
Crossing is not as hard as you might
think.'
I had not thought
that it would be like this

out with joy to God all the

Christ,
our Way to new life
"I have come
that they may have life and have it
to the full." You couldn't get
a clearer statement of intent and
desire than that from anyone. The
practice of our faith is about making
that desire of Jesus a reality for
one another. That's why he gave us
his commandment to love one another.
The fulfillment of that longing should
be our aim in all that we do. It is
the major task for every married couple,
to help this other person to come
to the greatest fulfillment of her/his
potential. And if parents want to
know what their parenting is about
they have a true statement of it in
this word of Christ. Parenting is
not about what they give to their
children but what they help their
children to become as individuals.
It is also a word for every parish
community this week. We dare not settle
for anything less than the best.

The
Deep End * Pie in the sky?
To an atheist – once described
as someone with no visible means of
support – Christian hope must
seem like a cry to on high for pie
in the sky. What Christians hope for,
i.e. a new heaven and a new earth,
has no scientific basis. Indeed it
can’t have. At present, all
that science can ultimately foresee
is a frozen waste of nothingness.
The heart-warming prospect of blissful
eternal life has no basis other than
in the word of God {Rev 21:1}.
In today’s second reading {1
Pet 3:15-18} Peter exhorts us to be
ready always to defend that hope.
And we do that basically by showing
how God has kept his promises historically
and by showing that his promises continue
to be fulfilled today.
Historically, God promised the seemingly
impossible only to fulfil it: Abraham
and Sarah in advanced age beget a
son, down-trodden Hebrews gain freedom
from their super-power slave-masters,
an eagerly awaited Messiah comes,
but in the most unexpected manner.
Killed and seemingly defeated, he
rises from death to fulfil his mission.
Today, God’s promises continue
to be fulfilled. He blesses us with
new life, with freedom from slavery
to sin, with the promise and hope
of resurrection.
Yet, perhaps there is one other way
to defend that hope: by allowing it
to put a pep in our step.
