Remember Who You Are
Fr Colm Kilcoyne once memorably recalled
how he and probably most of his generation
were sent off to school, sports or
socials with a good douse of holy
water from the huge hallway font and
the maternal greeting/warning ringing
in your ears; ‘now remember
who you are’. It wasn’t
really a reference to social standing.
Very few in Ireland had such a luxury
back then. It was more of a call back
to live
your life worthily, with the dignity
deserved.
Today, we are given a douse of Gospel
water to bring us back to our senses.
We need it as a lot of us do lose
the run of ourselves. We seem to develop
an amnesia of the spirit and lose
our connections with our better self,
with God and with people. The rich
man in God’s kingdom is the
man with no name. That is because
he has lost his identity. In total
contrast Lazarus who is unnoticed
in this world has an identity. There
is no reason to believe that the rich
man was a bad person either, probably
so busy and harried that he just did
not notice.
Today, ‘remember who you are’.
Take a good look around you at who
and what you need to take notice of.
Fr Tom Cox
