A Young Woman
with a Child on Each Hand
At
this time of year children are returning
to school. In this poem a mother looks
enviously back at the time her children
were younger and life was simpler
A young woman with a child on each
hand
turns at the zebra crossing
to join two more young women,
one pregnant, one tilting a pram.
She is vital, almost beautiful.
Her sons are sturdy and neat.
She walks into the life I am leaving.
When she greets her
friends, I am aware
mothercraft has blinded her, till
anxiety
thins her voice. I want to call out,
that for her, now is filled.
with simple certainties—a
spilled cup,
a rowdy room, a bed-time story. But
as she moves down the street, I can
only guess the weight
of her sacrifice, her tenderness
as her hands keep emptying, emptying…

The
strength of Christ’s Spirit
“What will
you gain if you win the whole world
and ruin your life?” Our society
promotes three things as the sources
of human happiness and fulfilment:
positions of importance and power;
money and possessions; continuous
pleasure. Obviously all of these are
important for the human person. But,
when they become the reason for living,
they are full of false promise. Jesus
calls on us to put our trust in the
important things of life, especially
love, and to find there our true fulfilment.
We engage in this struggle in all
kinds of ways but especially in matters
of love and faith. Spending time at
prayer, either personal or as a community,
can been seen as wasting opportunities
for other things that could bring
us rewards. Giving time to one another
in marriage and family life is often
done reluctantly because of what we
might be missing. And yet these are
the really important things of life.

Doherty, C.Ss.R.

The Deep End
– God the Seducer
The amazingly popular film Into Great
Silence – the one about the
Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps
– has the first verse of today's
First Reading [Jer: 20: 7-9] as a
recurring refrain: ‘O Lord,
you have seduced me and I let myself
be seduced’. It seems to be
the only explanation for someone to
embrace so strict a lifestyle: silent,
celibate, solitary and frugal. But
what a way to talk about God! And
what a way for God’s word to
talk about God! It has an intensity
to it that’s almost palpable.
Only someone very close to God would
use such language. Only a God very
close to that person would allow it.
How many people get so close to God
that they can speak like that about,
and to, God? In those words lie a
passionate history, a complex relationship,
and an intense hunger. Only someone
with depth, passion and commitment
could speak like that to God. Only
someone struggling with God’s
approaches, doing all they can to
resist them but knowing that they
can't, and in their heart of hearts
admitting to themselves that they
don’t really want to resist
them could use such language convincingly.
Does this in any way reflect our experience
of dealing with God? Do we struggle
with God? Do we resist God’s
advances? Have we felt God’s
seduction? Have we succumbed to God’s
will?
If it doesn’t mirror our experience,
if we haven’t had the struggle,
felt the seduction, discovered God’s
will then we should pray that we do.
Time is short.
